Received from: Fran Mittelstet, a Gazin descendent, on September 19, 2007
I was very glad to find out whether Mary went to medical school or if she studied with a doctor, and whether it was in the United States or in France. She graduated from the American School of Education in Philadelphia in 1836.
Her maiden name was Violet. Grandpa said that her husband wanted her to give up doctoring but she refused, so he moved to Colorado where one of their children lived. I don't know who.
Grandpa used to tell me stories about her. I don't know if you have come across references to a C. L. Gazin or not, but he was my Mother's cousin and a well know paleontologist with the Smithsonian. His wife, Elizabeth, was a librarian at the Library of Congress. She was very interested in genealogy and did most of the research I have on the Gazins. They tried to find a connection to Chateau Gazin (the winery) but were unable to do so. They said they had dinner with them and that they made great wine!
When the Gazins came to the U. S., it was a widow and her children who immigrated. Francois, her husband, had died. He was an officer in Napoleon's army. Some went to upstate New York into the Watertown area. There are still relatives there but I haven't talked to them. I have a friend that lives in the same county and she is going to send me phone numbers. I have heard that she bought a land grant from a soldier who fought in our revolution.
Francis went to Minnesota and I know at least one went to New Orleans. I believe that was Jean. There used to be a Joe Gazin who was a weather man in Houston who looked just like my uncles. There is still a Gazin spice company in New Orleans. Mother talked to the owner who said his mother's maiden name was Gazin.
Mary Crevier Gazin moved to Oklahoma with her youngest children before statehood.
